Which type of lightning protection to choose?
Currently there are two main technologies: active and passive lightning protection. Passive technology was invented earlier, and has long been used in protecting buildings. The perimeter and protruding roof lines are covered with a wire net from which numerous conductors are run down the facade. At the bottom, the circuit is closed and grounded with one or more plates dug into wet ground. The number of conductors and the area of the metal plates are selected in each case individually.
Active lightning protection appeared relatively recently, but has shown excellent results. Now it is the preferred way to neutralize the discharges of atmospheric electricity. A high lightning-receiving rod is installed above the building, attracting charged particles from the atmosphere. Within a radius of about 100 meters, lightning strikes only this conductive rod, which occupies the highest position. The conductor is connected to the soil with a cable of sufficiently large cross section so that frequent impacts do not lead to the melting of the wires.
More advanced active lightning protection has obvious advantages. Although a high mast is relatively expensive and more difficult to install, in general, the cost of work is reduced, due to the use of a smaller amount of materials for the circuit and lightning rods.
Preparation and installation
Since buildings vary greatly in their number of stories and layout, it is difficult to predict in advance what measures will be needed to protect against thunderstorms. Upon the client’s request, a specialist is called to the site and inspects the object. If we are talking about active thunderstorms outside the city, a whole complex of buildings can be included in a protected area. Including small wooden elements of the estate, which would be difficult and expensive to protect separately. Active lightning protection for mansions and commercial properties is ideal for a country estate location of a vast estate.
The selection of the points of the current conduction into the ground depends on the relief and moisture levels of the area. The grounded places should not dry out, and the discharge plates are buried to a sufficient depth. If the customer considers that their placement in certain places is undesirable, the lightning protection expert finds alternative options.
Installation works last from several hours to many days, given the complexity and size of the object. Installation of metal parts practically does not interfere with the usual life of a residential cottage or business, and can be carried out on weekdays. Moreover, there will be no problems when the lightning protection is already installed. Some current-carrying structures even adorn the building.
